NGTs Regulation adopted by the European Parliament

FEFAC welcomes the European Parliament’s adoption of the Regulation on plants obtained through New Genomic Techniques (NGTs), marking a key milestone for innovation in the EU agri-food sector after years of scientific assessment, policy debate and interinstitutional negotiations.

The Parliament’s endorsement of the trilogue compromise provides a clear and workable regulatory framework that will support the development and uptake of innovative plant breeding solutions. These technologies have the potential to enhance the sustainability, resilience and competitiveness of the European agri-food sector.

Over recent months, FEFAC, together with partner organisations such as FEDIOL and COCERAL, actively engaged with Members of the European Parliament to support a timely adoption of the proposal and to avoid the reopening of the file through late-stage amendments that could have undermined the potential usage of NGTs.

FEFAC also joined a coalition of 30 agri-food chain organisations in welcoming the trilogue agreement, underlining the broad support across the sector for a balanced and science-based regulatory approach to NGTs.

The adopted Regulation is expected to enter into force 20 days after its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union and will apply two years thereafter.

Looking ahead, FEFAC will continue to engage with EU institutions and stakeholders during the implementation phase to ensure that the regulation delivers on its objectives.
