FEFAC Welcomes the EU Vision for Agriculture and Food: Strategic Recommendations for a Competitive, Sustainable, and Resilient EU Livestock and Aquaculture Sector

The European Feed Manufacturers’ Federation (FEFAC) welcomes the European Commission’s new workstream as an integral part of the new Vision for Agriculture and Food, dedicated to shaping a long-term forward-looking strategy for sustainable, resilient, and competitive EU livestock and aquaculture production. FEFAC commends the Commission’s inclusive approach, which recognises the diversity of livestock systems across Europe and the pivotal role and contribution of the animal feed sector in supporting the successful transition of the EU’s livestock and aquaculture sectors.

FEFAC President, Pedro Cordero, wishes “full success for the EU’s Vision and the new workstream on livestock. FEFAC would like to express our sincere appreciation for the comprehensive, outcome-focused, and pragmatic approach taken by the EC in its Vision for Agriculture and Food, particularly regarding livestock. We fully agree that the sector requires a forward-looking strategy that acknowledges the diversity and resilience of livestock production across Europe and supports its sustainable competitiveness.”

FEFAC underscores that feed represents the single largest production cost for livestock and aquaculture systems—ranging from 40% to 80% of total costs, depending on the animal species and production system. Therefore, it is essential that the new workstream addresses all relevant EU policy areas impacting feed production costs to strengthen the competitiveness of European farmers in an overarching, cross-cutting approach. Ensuring the resilience and efficiency of the feed supply chain is crucial to ensure the farmer’s profitability and a prerequisite for stable food prices and food security.

Consequently, FEFAC’s recommendations for the new EU Vision on Agriculture and Food are centred on delivering innovative feed sector solutions that drive sustainable competitiveness based on the prioritisation of Circular Feed in the EU Bioeconomy.

FEFAC stands ready to work closely with the European institutions and all value chain partners and interested Civil Society Groups to ensure the successful implementation of the Vision for Agriculture and Food, and to secure a sustainable, competitive future for Europe’s livestock and aquaculture sectors.
