Sustainable Livestock Intergroup - 28 January 2026

The Sustainable Livestock Intergroup of the European Parliament will host a dedicated event on 28 January 2026 at the Committee of the Regions, bringing together policymakers, farmers, scientists and international organisations to discuss how European livestock production can further reduce greenhouse gas emissions while remaining economically viable. Established in 2025, the Intergroup serves as a platform for evidence-based dialogue on animal farming, aiming to balance environmental performance, food production, farmer livelihoods and animal welfare through practical, science-driven solutions.

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a cornerstone of global climate action and a key objective of the European Climate Law. The EU livestock sector is already contributing to this effort by cutting emissions across the food production chain, particularly those linked to methane and manure management.

According to the European Environment Agency, emissions from European livestock fell by 23% between 1990 and 2014. While progress has slowed since then, agriculture still recorded a further 6% decrease between 2005 and 2023, largely driven by livestock-related reductions. These figures underline both the achievements to date and the need to accelerate action.

Across the EU, farmers and industry stakeholders are implementing a wide range of solutions, including better animal health management, improved feed quality, genetic progress and circular economy approaches. However, these measures require sustained investment. Without fair returns for farmers, long-term emissions reductions will not be achievable.

The upcoming meeting will offer a unique opportunity to hear directly from the FAO, researchers, breeders and farmers on how far the sector has progressed and what policy and market support is needed to keep EU livestock producers at the forefront of low-emissions, sustainable farming.
